A conference on “Museums and Human Rights Education” was held in Sofia on September 29, 2021. Presentations and discussions included topics such as “The role of cultural institutions in human rights education”, “Museums as centers of community”, ” Contemporary approaches applied by museums to involve young people in human rights activities “,” Challenges for small urban museums in working with children and youth. “

The conference was attended by experts from the Academy of Human Rights, Norway, Lillian Hjorth and Evgenia Khoroltseva; Thorleif Hamre from the Eidsvoll 1814 Museum of the Norwegian Constitution  and Ellen Lange from the National Science and Technology Museum in Norway.  Presentations of initiatives conducted by young people from Gotse Delchev, Blagoevgrad, Montana and Varshets have shown how the human rights approach can be applied to important aspects of community life – education, security, health, privacy, freedom of expression and citizen participation.

The conference was the final event of the project “Increasing democratic competence and understanding of human rights of young people”. The project is implemented in the municipalities of Montana, Varshets, Blagoevgrad and Gotse Delchev in partnership with the Academy of Human Rights, Norway and with the financial support provided by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway under the EEA Financial Mechanism.
